Fiji’s champion of champion Rugby 7s tournament, the McDonald’s Fiji’s Coral Coast Sevens will take place in late 2021, the exact date of which will be announced later in the year, tournament organizers announced this week.

The 11th installment of McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens was moved as a result of the global pandemic COVID19.

The premier sevens event, dubbed the champion of champion because entrants have to proven champion status by ending in the top 3 places of a local tournament, is usually staged in the second weekend in January and attracts top tier clubs from around the globe.

The 10th edition was staged in January 2020, just before  the global shutdown in March 2020. Tournament director and founding Chairman Jay Whyte said his team had consulted with key  tournament sponsors to discuss best options for the 11th installment of the event.

“It is for this reason that after lengthy deliberations and  in-depth discussions, it was agreed that the best way forward was to move the tournament  to late 2021 following the expected opening of international borders to allow travellers to move between countries freely,” Mr Whyte said.

“Obviously we are disappointed to reschedule the 2021 tournament date but we know in  the grand scheme of things, when things normalize we will be excited to stage the event as  a welcome back party to friends and fans.”

A final decision on date will be confirmed after the HSBC World Series date and format for 2021-2022 is announced.

“As added interest, the tournament will be reviving its original GREAT EIGHT qualifying  tournament which will give all teams from around Fiji the opportunity to win their way  through,” Mr Whyte said.

“Teams that qualify as winners of partner events of the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast  Sevens will continue to qualify and participate in our champion of champions event that has  become such a focus for the many 7s teams around Fiji and sevens rugby teams from Asia,  North American and the Pacific.”
